I made this painting of my dad and gave it to him for Christmas:
It’s based on this photo I took when we were just getting ready to head in for the day after some fishing around the lake near my relatives’ house.
The composition and lighting effects already looked really nice (that’s why I took the photo), so it wouldn’t be hard to turn it into a cool painting.
I made the painting process quick and easy by following my method. I cropped the photo a little and put it through a complex colorband filter to map out where I’d like to use my selected colors. For some reason I felt drawn to a dark blue, a bold lime green, and a pale yellow. Those were the only colors used, and the colorband filter made it really clear where I should use which color (or which combination of two). My method is all about narrowing down the options so I can just sit down and paint without getting carried away by all the possibilities.
Then I just put this image on my TV as a reference and got to work.
